To boost the city’s environmental campaign, a Memorandum of Agreement for CdeO EcoBag, an initiative of the Environment & Natural Resources Committee and the Social Services Committee, is jointly signed by City Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Y. Emano and representatives of the major malls and supermarkets. SM, Robinsons, Ororama, Gaisano and Savemore participated in the campaign. This is anticipated to effectively reduce the use of plastics particularly in the malls and stores as covered by City Ordinance #12395-12 (City Ecobag Project).

This initiative of the local government is to create a pollution free atmosphere in the city. The move will give impetus to the city’s campaign for the reduction of the pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastic bags. Also this will provide livelihood to Tropical storm Sendong survivors who have organized themselves into a cooperative. They will be manufacturing the eco-bags (to be sold at P35.00/piece). This is under the guidance of the Department of Socail Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The supermarkets on the other hand will give preference to the sale of eco bags in the course of their usual business and for that purpose, the supermarkets will no longer give out plastic bags to customers, unless there is no available eco-bag or when the customer so desires.
