A Breast Cancer Awareness Advocacy Core Group was just launched last saturday, August 18, 2012 at the LimketKai Center – East Concourse. The name of the group is THRIVE, it’s a non-stock, non-partisan, non-profit, advocacy core group composed of breast cancer survivors and supporters whose primary aims are to raise awareness on breast cancer and to partner with local government units, schools and other interested organizations on bringing women’s health care services, particularly for affordable or free breast cancer screening and surgery, to indigent patients.
With the highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia and the lack of financial resources for many marginalized patients, there is a need to allocate funds for breast cancer screening, surgery and other treatment options to increase the survival rate of early stage breast cancer patients on the grassroots level. Thus, as stakeholders of this cause, THRIVE’s second aim is to work as a link between agencies and companies that are willing to join in the advocacy of funding breast cancer treatment and the marginalize early stage breast cancer patients who will benefit from the financial and medical assistance.
Concurrently, the goal of the group is to lobby for a local or multinational institution and or a government agency to permanently set up Icanserve’s Ating Dibdibin program (which permanently puts breast cancer care in the city health offices) in Cagayan de Oro City and its neighboring cities and municipalities.
THRIVE welcomes invitations from interested organizations for lay-fora on the breast cancer awareness campaign.
